Bristly oxtongue

Common name : Bristly oxtongue

Latin name : Picris hieracioides

A very common member of the Daisy family (Asteraceae)

The bright and cheery flowers resemble dandelions, but there are very clear differences. This plant is very stiff and spiky with very prickly bracts (green leaf shaped areas around the flowers). These overlap and enclose the flower head

It grows easily on verges, wasteland. The spiky blistered leaf rosette is also distinctive.
Lots of pollinators like this plant, though it can tend to take over a wildflower meadow. It is easily dug out unwanted.
