It’s amazing how many people don’t know about this beach garden, which is on the seafront opposite the concession beach huts! On a busy day it’s a real oasis of calm!
The beach garden was designed in 2011 by John Marder and funded by Seaford Town council. The raised parts of the garden were developed and landscaped using old beach groynes and constructed entirely by volunteers.
Plants here need to be very hardy and tolerant of storms, strong winds and spray. Native maritime plants have been particularly successful as have cultivated plants such as tamarisk, red valerian and red hot pokers.
A team of volunteers have maintained the garden ever since it was built.
The Working Party meets once a month during the summer for three hours. No great skill is required, and tools can be supplied. The work is predominantly weeding and pruning and occasionally planting so there is no hard physical work.
It is a brilliant opportunity to get exercise and fresh air in this beautiful place. You can also learn about the plants that grow in such harsh salt-laden winds, which might give you ideas for your own garden.
We are seeking more helpers to join our team. The next Working Party is meeting at 9.30 a.m. on Monday 10th June. If you can’t make this date, we will meet on 15h July.
Do get in touch (or just turn up!) you would be most welcome.
