Cat’s-ear

Common name : Cat’s-ear

Latin name : Hyoicgaerus radicata

A member of the Daisy family (Asteraceae)

There are many very similar species in this family including hawkweeds and hawkbits! This one can be distinguished from dandelions, by the leaves pictured right which feel “furry” to the touch (hence the name!) Flowers heads are solitary on stems which have no leaves, but tiny scales instead. Also note the “cockscomb” flower head shape.

We suggest you consult a good wildflower book such as The Wild Flower key by Francis Rose to identify similar species. Also note the flower head shape.

Found in Seaford green spaces including the wild edges to the Crouch and St Leonard’s churchyard.
