Gardening In Action was formed in March 2020 at the start of the first U.K. lockdown.
Back in March 2020, we gained over 200 social members in the first 24 hours of launching GIA, and now have over 700!
We offer practical support to community gardens, we run friendly and inclusive gardening workshops in community spaces, we operate a successful horticultural work experience programme to help people into employment and we match volunteers with community groups.
Community Gardens
Community gardens – often created from unused or neglected spaces – bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to grow their own produce, enjoy the outdoors, share skills and make friends.
GIA advises many community gardens across East Sussex: everything from advice on vegetable growing, compost and raised beds through to land leases, risk assessments and insurance. We’re delighted to be working with the Sussex Community Development Association to develop our Growing Communities Toolkit – a resource for community gardeners.
The Peverells Garden
A little-known play park called The Peverells in the Cradle Hill area of Seaford is home to a secret garden! The Peverells play park also encompasses The Cabin which has been developing its growing space. But where is the secret garden community garden?

Cultivate Training
The Cultivate horticulture training programme provides job seekers, career changers, and college students with quality work experience and horticultural training. Hours volunteered and skills learned are documented with employment references provided*. Training is given in a range of horticulture skills by qualified, experienced horticulturalists.
Our programme is committed to fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities whatever your abilities, additional needs or background. We believe everyone should have equal access to professional development and the chance to pursue their passion for horticulture.
We’ve been running the programme since 2022, and of the 30 people who’ve joined the programme, 28 have successfully found employment, and 2 are still with us.
Our only requirement is that you’re over 16 years old. We’d ideally like a regular commitment of 2 to 16 hours a week but could accommodate a smaller or larger number of hours. We have a positive attitude to overcoming mental and physical challenges and would love to work with you and support your journey to accessing the career you seek.
