How lucky we are in Seaford having so many fantastic green spaces to enjoy!

The stunning Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve stretches from Seaford Head golf course eastwards to the Cuckmere valley, and north to Exceat bridge. It’s within the South Downs National Park and part of the Sussex Heritage Coast, home to many nationally rare and special species of plant and wildlife.

We also have the Ouse Valley Nature Reserve, created to conserve wildlife and provide flood management, which is home to a wide variety of birds, insects, plants and amphibians including Great Crested Newts. The undisturbed shingle beach at Tidemills is particularly good to spot interesting plants. Read more about a recent guided walk by the SNHS.

The Old Brickfield situated at the western edge of Seaford has also been designated a site of nature conservation interest (SNCI). On the site of a former tidal inlet it had an industrial past when clay for brick making was extracted from the site. Today it provides interesting habitats for many different species of animal, insects and vegetation. The site is owned and managed by Lewes District Council in partnership with the Friends of the Old Brickfield Group.

To the north there are lovely wild flower meadow trails at Rathfinny vineyard, with audio information points.

In the town, we are lucky to have a number of other green spaces for recreation purposes, and Seaford Town Council and Lewes District council, have been working with On the Verge and other partners, to improve the biodiversity in these spaces.

Mowing regimes have been changed, to allow areas of meadow to flourish, which attracts insects, and in turn birds, mammals and reptiles.

Areas of meadow have been managed at the edges of the Crouch, in the “Sea Meadows” of the Martello Fields and nearby fields in College Road, the Salts, Sandore Road and Princess Drive. Groups have been regularly monitoring these areas and recording the wildflowers and wildlife found there.

Seaford Community Partnership and Martello Rotary are also working with the council, to agree more formal agreements to protect and better manage other green spaces, for people and wildlife. Find out more about here

If you know of other green spaces, please let us know so we can add these to this page.
