Judy spots a very welcome mammal in town!
It was dark as I walked to the train station early one morning. Winter comes far too quickly. However as I walked along South street in Seaford, I realised that I was not alone! Was it a pigeon ahead of me? Or a rat maybe? No it was a hedgehog, how wonderful! It rolled up in a ball as I approached, and before I could get a photo, it uncurled and ran off down the pavement!
Hedgehogs are sadly in decline and it was fantastic to see one so close to town. No doubt they will soon be going into hibernation, but at the moment it has been mild and they are still out looking for food.
When I popped in the SEA hub this week, I see they have a map where you can mark any hedgehog sightings, so I marked the spot with a star sticker! They also have lots of information about what you can do for hedgehogs!
If you spot hedgehogs, make sure you record them too (for example you can do this on irecord)
(photos taken at the British Wildlife Centre, a great place to get up close with wildlife, open weekends only)
