Seaford Natural History Society (SNHS) is a friendly group of local people with a shared interest in all aspects of wildlife, who have been studying and recording all branches of natural history for over 60 years.
We have a regular programme of meetings throughout the year. In the Summer we have outdoor meetings at nearby locations (plus one or two longer outings) with specific wildlife interest. In the winter, we have a programme of talks on a wide variety of wildlife-related subjects. We have in excess of 20 meetings each year.
Quite a number of our members are also involved in a variety of wildlife recording activities – we are currently undertaking three weekly butterfly transects, a Reptile survey, Moth trapping at various locations around the Town, an annual survey of the Moon Carrots on Seaford Head, as well as counts of all the wild Orchid species found on Seaford Head. We also undertake a Grassland Assessment for the National Trust at Crowlink and Gayles Farm.
Many of our members also engage in wildlife recording more informally, which creates recorded knowledge of the wildlife in our area and an understanding of local biodiversity. This in turn informs decision-making at a number of levels and enables it to take account of the needs of our wildlife.
Over the past year, we have engaged in a new venture, to renovate the Dewpond at South Hill Barn, on Seaford Head., with funding from South Downs National Park Trust. The overall aim of the work on the Dewpond is to restore it for the benefit of wildlife.
We have a comprehensive website with lots of information and a facebook page for members.
What you can do:
New members are always welcome. Individual membership is £20 per person (additional members at the same address £10 per person
Non-members are welcome to come to our talks and most of our walks: in each case we ask for a donation of £3.
