Bud burst has finally happened! What a joy it is to see the tender greens and delicate blossom of April and May unfurl across the landscape.
It is deeply satisfying to know that Trees for Seaford have contributed a little to that beautiful show and get feedback from residents about how they are enjoying their street trees!
Spring TLC
Over March our working parties continued with ongoing tree care at several locations around the town, including restaking, replacing ties and significant pruning at the Crouch, Saltwood, Westdown and Grosvenor Roads. Huge thanks to Alex Lucas at Tree Wizard for his help in chipping all the clippings!
Our arrangement with ESCC is that they take over the care of the trees we plant once those trees grow too tall to be managed from the ground, so we are pleased that we now have “graduands” in several locations around town who will soon move into the council care.
Do continue to report issues with smaller trees to Trees for Seaford. We are slowly putting labels on the trees for which we are responsible, but we can also forward concerns to the relevant councils. The wet and windy weather this winter has been challenging for our trees!
Trees in Walmer Road
Out of adversity, good things may come. When trees in Walmer Road were destroyed last year, who would have foreseen that it would be the catalyst to setting up a “Friends of Walmer Road Rec”? The group brings together local residents and other stakeholders to plan what can be done to further enhance the park and tackle anti-social behaviour. If you are interested in getting involved, please email friendsofwalmerroadrec@gmail.com. The group now has a committee, some funding from OVCA, and a Facebook page. There has been a litter pick morning, 2 publicity events at Chyngton School and pledges of support from Seaford Football Club. The next activity is on May 4th for a joint volunteer event with Trees for Seaford to help erect protective cages around the 30+ trees lining Walmer Road and thus safeguard them for the next generation! If you can help on the day, we’d love to see you there!
Peverells Community Garden
Weather permitting, by the time you read this, 22 fruit trees should have been planted at the Peverells for the future enjoyment and delight of the local community. We are looking forward to a day of communal activity and fun as we bed in the new apple trees, under the direction of the Gardening in Action group.
Autumn Planting
Our plans for autumn planting are now advancing and we will be examining underground utility maps and leafleting residents in nominated roads. We hope to publish the names of the autumn planting locations soon!
Enjoy the beauty of spring!
